In a tragic turn of events, 28-year-old Rohidas Ashok Jadhav, a resident of Siddhi Apartment in Wagholi, Pune, lost his life due to severe burn injuries sustained after he set himself ablaze in front of the Wagholi police chowki. The incident, which occurred on February 13, stemmed from reported inaction by the police regarding Jadhav’s complaint.
Jadhav’s extreme step followed disputes among housing society members over trivial issues, notably concerning vehicle parking spots. Allegedly frustrated by the lack of resolution from the authorities, Jadhav resorted to self-immolation in front of the police chowki.
Immediately after the incident, Jadhav was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention. However, despite efforts by medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries six days later, on Monday morning, at Surya-Sahyadri Hospital. According to the hospital’s spokesperson, Jadhav was admitted with severe burn injuries, covering approximately 95% of his body.
The tragic incident has prompted swift action from the Pune police department. In response to the gravity of the situation, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Manoj Patil has suspended several police personnel, including API Ashok Ghegde, constable Kailas Ugle, and constable Mahendra Shinde.
Expressing condolences over Jadhav’s demise, Pune Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar described the incident as unfortunate. Investigations into the circumstances leading to Jadhav’s drastic act are ongoing, with authorities keen to address any lapses in handling complaints and ensuring accountability within the police force.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of addressing citizens’ grievances promptly and effectively, emphasizing the need for responsive and responsible governance at all levels.
